Space is a specialized architectural monthly which was first published in 1966 and has been at the vanguard of covering the arts and culture scene here in Korea ever since. The magazine features not only architecture, but also diverse cultural and artistic activities across the spectrum of the fine arts. Space offers its readers a wide variety of architectural news throughout Korea, in Asia, and the world in general. Marvelling at Voluntary Structural Experiments: Kim Jaekyung + JK-AR 의지적 구조 실험이 만드는 경이: 김재경+JK-AR • 애써 난제를 설정하고, 이를 해결하기 위해 구조 실험에 몰두한다. 김재경의 건축 은 여기에서 시작된다. 이 실험은 세 그루 집, 빛의 루를 통해 잘 알려진 나무뿐 아니라 콘크리트, 철까지 다양한 재료를 아우른다. 그렇게 도출된 구조들이 꼭 합리적이지만은 않다. 하지만 왜 굳이 이런 구조를 택했는가 하는 의문과 구조적 놀라움, 다소 장식적이기까지한 구조미는 우리의 눈길을 끄는 힘이 있다. 김현대 (이화여자대학교 교수)가 “어떤 구조가 가장 합리적인지보다 어떤 재료를 어떻 게 사용했을 때 필연적이어 보일 수 있는가를 탐구하는 것 같다”고 말한 이 구조 실험에서 양수인(삶것건축사사무소 대표)은 ‘경이로움’이라는 의미를 찾았다. 자 이제, 실험의 결과를 살펴보자.Deliberately creating dilemmas and immersing oneself in structural experimentation to find a solution; this is where Kim Jaekyung’s architectural practice begins. These experiments encompass diverse materials, such as wood – which is well known for its use in the House of Three Trees and the Pavilion of Floating Lights – as well as concrete and steel. The resulting structures are not necessarily rational. And yet, the questions concerning why such structures were chosen, what makes for structural surprises, and how the overall structural aesthetics were arrived at – even in decorative terms – are compelling and capture our attention. Hyundai Kim (professor, Ewha Womans University) describes these structural experiments as ‘exploring not so much rational structures, but how structures can appear inevitable when certain materials are used in certain ways’, while Yang Soo-in (principal, Lifethings) finds their meaning to be a ‘marvel’. Let’s take a look at the results of these experiments.
